Moments before two small airplanes collided with each other in the skies above a suburban shopping centre, air traffic control at Saint-Hubert airport, near Montreal, was trying desperately to warn one of the pilots of nearby traffic.

It was piloted by a 21-year-old Cargair student, who pointed his craft eastwards towards the Promenades Saint-Bruno shopping centre.

From the ground, witnesses described seeing one plane shear the wing off the other. "Then we saw pieces of plane fall out of the sky everywhere".

One eyewitness, Carol Pelchat, told the news channel that she heard two planes overhead when she came out of the shopping mall.

Police said the cause of the crash is unknown but it appears to be accidental.

Jonathan Vanasse was eating at a restaurant next to the parking lot crash site.

A police spokeswoman said one of the plans crashed onto the roof of a store, while the other crashed into the parking lot.

The area was closed off after initial reports of a fuel leak.

"There was just shredded metal", he said, referring to the wreckage. One of them died, the other was seriously injured.

Both planes were owned by a local flight school, Cargair, and both planes were Cessna 152 aircraft.

Investigators from the Transportation Safety Board told Global News they finished their work at the scene Friday evening.

"We are concentrating our efforts to support our employees and students who are part of the Cargair family", the company said, adding it wouldn't be issuing any further comment.
