Julia's character was introduced in 2015 in the print and digital storybooks through Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children initiative, but will feature in the episodes only from April.

Diagnoses of autism have risen steadily in recent years to the rate of one in every 68 American children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The show's producers told CBS News they struggled over how to talk about autism to a young audience, because it's different for every person. "There is an expression that goes, "If you've met one person with Autism, you've met one person with Autism", Ferraro added.

Julia is a first in the almost 50-year history of the show, which has been found to have a profound educational impact on children. In 2015, a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research concluded that Sesame Street was a very effective low-priced educational supplement for children in economically disadvantaged areas.

"In the USA, one in 68 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder", Betancourt said in the interview. It's a very personal job for Gordon, whose son has autism. "I'm just hoping to bring her the heart". "She needs to take a break", explains Big Bird's human friend Alan calmly.

The rest of Stahl's segment gives the basic origin story for "Sesame Street" and includes an interview with founder Joan Ganz Cooney, who first researched the idea in the 1960s at the request of the Carnegie Corporation. "You have Julia on your team, and she is really good at finding shapes!" Later on, Julia will be jumping up and down, too excited to play tag, and the other characters will instead change their game to join her.

At this stage, it's not known if Julia will become a major character on the show, but Ms Ferraro - who has been writing it for 25 years - is keen.

Julia also will struggle with loud noises and make up a game with her new friends.

Sesame Street worked with 250 autism organizations and experts, including Autism Speaks, as well as its own regular child psychologists to develop Julia. "I thought that maybe she didn't like me", Big Bird said after revealing that Julia initially ignored him.

Julia, a little girl, has orange hair, a toy rabbit - and autism.

And in this video, she and Elmo play peek-a-boo, and also educate kids on how to play side by side.

"All children with autism are different, but they do have characteristics which are common".

But it is later explained to them that "she just does things a little differently - in a Julia sort of way".
