There are also plans to release 750GB and 1.5TB PCIe models and 375GB, 750GB and 1.5GB models with a U.2 form factor throughout 2017.

The above cases show that the Optane SSD DC P4800X series offers the kind of performance that is ideal for data centres and the acceleration of enterprise applications, says Intel.

Sadly, this functionality isn't as flexible as it first sounds, in Optane's initial outing at least: Intel is launching two distinct products, the Intel Optane SSD DC P4800X and the Intel Optane SSD DC P4800X with Intel Memory Drive Technology. But in addition to acting as a substitute for NAND for storage, the drive can also act as a main memory source in tandem with a server's DRAM. What do you guys think of Intel's new 3D XPoint SSD? Even though DRAM is cheaper today than ever before, it still costs significantly more than NAND and its volatile characteristics (where a loss of power causes data to be lost) makes it less than flawless for critical business applications.

Meanwhile, Micron is targeting its SSDs based on Xpoint technology at cloud applications, data analytics, online transaction processing and the Internet of Things.

Hence, the Optane SSD leverages the Xpoint approach unveiled in 2015 to boost memory density by as much as ten times compared to conventional memory chips, claim Intel and development partner Micron Technology Inc. Intel believes that this new storage technology will drive new solutions with applications such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, faster trading, and deeper insights into medical scans. Intel said it expects the cost structure to be closer to that of NAND than of DRAM.

Intel argues that current storage approaches based on DRAM and NAND are contributing to the current datacenter storage gap, and that storage platform increasingly need to behave "like system memory".

The drives are available immediately to Intel customers in the early ship program. It will be available in limited quantities, priced at $1,520 (approximately Rs. 99,384).

"It blurs the line between system memory and storage", said Diane Bryant, an executive vice president who oversees Intel's Data Center Group.

The Intel company has revealed its first 3D XPoint drive, the DC P4800X.
