Disney's live-action "Beauty" was a beast at the box office, opening with an estimated $170 million in North American ticket sales and setting a new high mark for family movies.

According to latest reports, The picture brought in an impressive $170 million, well above analyst expectations of $130 million to $150 million.

Starring British actors Emma Watson and Dan Stevens in the lead roles, the $160 million United States production updates the beloved 1991 animated film and is the latest of Disney's live-action reboots. It's already looking at the March opening weekend record set just previous year by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with $166 million.

Disney has proven once more that audiences have a thirst for live-action remakes of its animated classics.

The Disney live-action remake, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, opened worldwide on Friday (March 17) and started breaking box office records nearly immediately.

"Nostalgia is a very powerful driver for these films", said Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney.

Whether or not Beauty and the Beast can maintain its lead depends on next weekend.

Belle is now within striking distance of Marvel Studios' Iron Man 3, though it appears that it will fall short of the Robert Downey Jr and Shane Black film's $174 million.

The star-studded cast - which includes British actors Emma Watson, Ewan McGregor and Emma Thompson - recorded the largest March opening weekend in the US.

Corporate social experiment/gore-fest The Belko Experiment managed $1.5 million on Friday, and that's probably not the worst it could have done considering it only got 1,341 theaters on the weekend. With a budget of $4.5 million, the film is one of the year's most profitable.

"Kong: Skull Island" slipped one place to number two after opening strong with a $61 million debut last weekend.
