Syria fired missiles at Israeli warplanes early on Friday after a series of Israeli air strikes inside Syria.

An Israeli army statement said "several anti-aircraft missiles" were fired following the raid, but that none hit their targets, rejecting a Syrian claim that one plane was downed and another damaged.

Damascus said Syrian anti-aircraft systems confronted the planes and shot one of them down over Israeli- controlled territory and hit another.

Israeli fighter jets at dawn Friday struck a number of targets in next-door Syria, according to the Israeli military.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Hezbollah leader said that the United Nations could not be trusted to defend the Arabs' rights in the wake of the resignation of a UN official for refusing to withdraw a damning report against Israel. Late previous year, IDF troops operating in the disputed Golan region came under fire from militants of the ISIS affiliate Khalid ibn al-Walid Army, Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said.

Moreover, the Syrian army has repeatedly seized huge quantities of Israeli-made weapons and advanced military equipment from the foreign-backed militants inside Syria.

President Bashar al-Assad's position has been strengthened in recent months with his forces reclaiming the whole of Syria's second city Aleppo, as well as enjoying continuing Russian support.

One of the missiles was intercepted by Israel's Arrow missile defense system, marking its first operational use.

Israeli aerial defence systems intercepted one of the missiles but the army would not say if any other missiles struck Israeli-held territory, but confirmed the safety of Israeli civilians and Israeli aircraft was "not compromised".

In highly unusual comments confirming the operation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: "Our policy is very consistent".

In 2015, a reported Israeli airstrike near Quneitra killed Hezbollah commander Jihad Mughniyeh, amid claims that he had been setting up a base from which to shoot rockets at Israel.

"Each time we discover arms transfers from Syria to Lebanon we will act to stop them".

Following the war, Israel began developing the Golan, freeing farmers in the Hula Valley from daily Syrian sniper fire.
