Stewart Downing was at the heart of Aitor Karanka's sacking at Middlesbrough. "On the balance of the game at that time, I thought we deserved it".

The Premier League strugglers are without a manager after Aitor Karanka resigned on Thursday with the club sitting 19th in the table.

When quizzed by BT Sport on whether he planned to contact Pearson or McClaren, the popular owner said: "No - we are going with Steve Agnew".

The Spaniard's former assistant has been placed in temporary charge of team affairs while Gibson assesses his options, of which one is to install a proven firefighter on a short-term basis.

They fell 2-0 behind on Sunday to goals from Marouane Fellaini and Jesse Lingard, before substitute Rudy Gestede pulled one back with Boro's first league goal for 509 minutes.

"I've known him for a long time and have done courses with him".

"I know we'll take that fighting spirit for the rest of the season".

I think I'm capable of delivering it, the players are capable of delivering it and I know we have got the support of everyone else in the club, and the supporters will play a massive part in that.

"But I keep using the word "confident", and I do believe we'll stay in the Premier League". He's a very good coach and a very good number two.

Despite the setback, Gibson insists that he hopes Agnew will still be in the hotseat this time next year. And I just felt that when we scored that goal, we had Manchester United defending that box for their lives.

Speaking before the game, Gibson had hinted Agnew could be Karanka's long-term successor as manager.

"We're better because of him, I hope he's better because of us, and we'll stay friends, our family will stay friends, we'll meet and have a beer and some dinner".

"This club will always hold a special place for me and I wish everyone connected with Middlesbrough Football Club the very best for the future".
