Intel still beats Ryzen at games, but how much does it matter?

In short, if you have a PC with the latest desktop processors from Intel or AMD and you try to run Windows 7 or Windows 8, 8.1 on it, Windows will automatically block all updates, effectively forcing you to move to Windows 10.

"Unsupported Hardware: Your PC uses a processor that isn't supported on this version of Windows and you won't receive updates".

According to a Microsoft KB article published last Thursday, Microsoft may soon begin blocking systems running Kaby Lake or AMD Ryzen CPUs from installing updates if they're running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

"The official word from Microsoft is that they are in fact doing everybody a justice by insuring that everybody updates to Windows 10 because Windows 10 works very close to the silicon and squeezes out all of the performance", Berg says in his video. Microsoft didn't explain to me how it would charge users now the free Window is closed.

The company's previous methods of convincing users to make the jump have upset some, and this policy is sure to ruffle feathers as well.

Users who build their own devices are most at risk, particularly those who have an aversion to Windows 10, and insist on running older versions of Microsoft's platform.

It should however be clear now that if you want to use the latest hardware, if you plan to run Windows you should also be using the latest Microsoft software also. Intel hinted that something similar would happen for Kaby Lake support a year ago.

This news was revealed through an addition to Microsoft's Support website, noting that either AMD's Bristol Ridge (mobile, Summer 2016 onward), or Intel's Kaby Lake will be required to access updates. It's also likely that AMD's new Ryzen processor is included in that list.

The question now becomes how many Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users are affected.

Code 80240037 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

"Ryzen will ultimately bring innovation and competition to virtually every segment of the PC market, and Ryzen 5 is the next big step on that journey, created to achieve new levels of compute performance for millions of PC users", said Jim Anderson, senior vice president and general manager of AMD's computing and graphics group. Extended support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 end on January 14, 2020 and January 10, 2023 respectively.
