Just this Thursday, Gematsu learned from the official Japanese PlayStation website that Sony has chose to terminate PS3 production after 11 years.

Former Sony exec Ken Kutaragi previously said that the console would have a 10-year life cycle. The console came out in Japan on November 11th, 2006 so it's almost been 11 years since the console first shipped out to stores.

How Sony's decision to end production will affect the USA market is unclear, but with the company putting all its focus into the PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro, expect support for the much-loved last-gen console to start disappearing worldwide. From time to time we have come across a number of editions of the gaming consoles from the house of Sony and one of the most popular has been the Sony PlayStation 3. Despite its sucessor releasing worldwide in 2013, the console remained popular until recently, specially in its Japanese home turf where many recent games were still released on both platforms.

The PlayStation 3, the first model of which was launched in November 2006, will soon be laid to rest. Sony will allow PC gamers to play modern PlayStation 4 titles via PlayStation Now starting from the second half of this year.

It is still not certain how this move will impact North America. However, Japanese site GamesTalk.net reports that shipments will be completed in March 2017. Several users now report of experiencing poor wireless network connectivity woes.

Announced via the PlayStation Blog, the game streaming service will expand the catalogue to include PS4 titles, but it doesn't say when.

Only Nintendo's DS can match Sony's machine in terms of unit sales.

PlayStation Now senior marketing manager Brian Dunn then said, "After thoughtful consideration, we chose to shift our focus and resources to PS4 and Windows PC to further develop and improve the user experience on these two devices".
