Microsoft ends updates for Windows 7/8.1 on new processors

Garry Little | 18 March, 2017, 01:05

The former software engineer then goes on to suggest that the low adoption rate of Windows 10 might be the real reason for Microsoft's scrapping of support for older operating systems on newer CPUs.

Microsoft will distribute the final version of the Windows 10 "Creators Update" to testers by the end of this month.

What's unclear is whether Microsoft had pulled the trigger on the no-patches-for-older-Windows rule and was showing users the messages outlined by the support document.

"Microsoft has provided support for Windows Vista for the past 10 years, but the time has come for us, along with our hardware and software partners, to invest our resources towards more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new experiences".

Windows 10 Home users may soon lose some of their already limited ability to prevent Microsoft from forcing automatic system updates on their PCs.

Microsoft announced the new-silicon support limitation in January 2016, when it said making Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 run on the latest processors was "challenging". Going forward, new processors, including Intel's Kaby Lake and AMD's recently-released Ryzen, would require the newest version of Windows.

And today, barely giving anyone the chance to install the last build, let alone test it, Microsoft rolls out yet another new update.

But sources familiar with the matter tell The Reg that such deals won't be on offer for Vista users. Devices built using AMD's new chips are just beginning to reach the market. Installing on Windows 8.1, however, is relatively smooth sailing, and with Kaby Lake's overwhelming similarity to Skylake, dropping support does feel rather unnecessary.

A few days ago we learned that with the Creators Update Microsoft has once again given themselves permission to download updates over metered connections ie. connections which charge by the megabyte. Yet some users with unusual hardware configurations may want to prevent system updates to avoid any potential conflicts. You should check Settings Update & security Windows Update to see if a restart is required.
