Borussia Dortmund admitted on Wednesday the season is over for Germany's fallen star Mario Goetze as the World Cup victor battles against an a unspecified metabolism disorder.

In a statement, Dortmund said the Germany global "can start back training in early summer" if he responds well to treatment and had "spoken positively" about its effects so far.

The long term target for the player is to be fully fit and ready to play for the start of next season. In the meantime, the 2014 FIFA World Cup victor will pursue his own individual training programme.

"Provided his treatment goes positively, Goetze can start again with performance-orientated training in early summer", Dortmund said.

The club had pulled Götze out of training on February 27, shortly after his "metabolic disturbances" were diagnosed.

"BVB wish Mario Gotze a fast recovery, also in the name of their 10 million fans", said Borussia Dortmund's chief executive officer Hans-Joachim Watzke.

Last month Dortmund confirmed the 24-year-old's recent spate of muscular problems had been caused by the "metabolic" issues, and ruled him out for an undetermined period of time.

Last July, Dortmund paid €22m to buy Gotze back from Bayern Munich, having been forced to sell him in 2013 for €37m after the Bavarians triggered a release clause in his contract.
