Scrapping flights hours ahead of a storm lets an airline re-allocate planes and crew earlier, meaning fewer flights and passengers canceled in total as a storm passes.

FLIGHT TRACKER: Is your flight on time? .

That's all according to The Weather Channel, which has been tracking the monster winter storm known as Stella that roared into the Northeast early Tuesday morning.

The worst of Monday's problems were in Chicago, where more than 450 flights were grounded at Chicago O'Hare and another 160 at Chicago Midway as of 11:55 a.m. ET, according to FlightAware. "My flight was scheduled for this morning ... it's cancelled".

American Airlines is waiving change fees for flights to and from certain airports in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Maine, and more.

Almost 3,000 flights were canceled Tuesday at Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty airports, according to the Port Authority, which operates those airports.

Airports from Washington, DC to the New England region, all saw their operations reduced by the winter weather.

At Tampa International Airport, as of 8 p.m. Monday around 26 flights were canceled due to the nor'easter.

It's business as usual Monday at Newark, Philadelphia and the two New York City airports.

Spirit: Customers going to affected cities can rebook through March 16 or March 18, depending on the airport. The state agency, which runs Logan, said it would work throughout the day to clear snow from runways and would keep the airfield open "unless conditions make snow removal operations unsafe".

Other global airlines will also be affected (whether by strike or by the weather).

Some airlines also let you change flights online and through social media. They're also experiencing a number of delays but anticipate flight schedules will return to normal later on Wednesday.

Cancellations were spilling into Wednesday, too.
