Coral Reefs Are Dying, Only Hope Is Halting Fossil Fuel Emissions

Great Barrier reef may not ever recover completely for the severe coral bleach: scientists “Extreme bleaching”

The study more or less says, therefore, that the Great Barrier Reef can not be brought back to its state prior to the 2016 bleaching event.

Coral bleaching has been one of the prime causes for the vanishing barrier reefs of Australia; and not just in Australia but also parts of the world where such ecosystems are found.

"We didn't expect to see this level of destruction to the Great Barrier Reef for another 30 years", Terry Hughes, lead author of the paper on the reef (that is the cover article of the new journal "Nature") told the New York Times. "This is the first time the Great Barrier Reef has not had a few years between bleaching events to recover", Dr. Cantin said.

Thus, differences in the severity of bleaching during the three events can be explained by differences in magnitude and spatial distribution of sea surface temperature anomalies. While the faster-growing coral can usually recover in between bleaching events, that's not an option for others. Coral bleaching occurs as a result of abnormal sea conditions, such as warmer or colder temperatures.

Scientists revealed today that Australia's Great Barrier Reef is doing worse than we previously thought.

Upon such progress do coral reefs depend, Hughes says.

Now, as the reef faces yet another bleaching event in 2017, a new report has found only one way to save the natural wonder: Fight climate change. If water temperatures stay high and corals stay bleached, they will eventually starve to death. A new bleaching event is under way now. "The bleaching in 2016 strongly reinforces the urgent need to limit climate change as agreed by world leaders in the Paris Agreement, and fully implement the Reef 2050 Plan to boost the Reef's resilience", said co-author Dr. David Wachenfeld from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

Unfortunately for the Great Barrier Reef, many sectors seem to be well into the starving stage. In the absence of such measures, the possibility of the great barrier reef getting its former glory back, or at least a part of it is nearly impossible.

"Immediate global action to curb future warming is essential to secure a future for coral reefs". It is worth worrying about, though, because of the fact that coral bleaching has happened in that same area two years in a row.

Australia's Great Barrier Reef is under serious threat of disappearing entirely and stopping global warming is the only way to save it, scientists have warned. The study claims water quality and fishing pressure "had minimal effect" on the bleaching, with local efforts affording "little or no resistance to extreme heat". The first time I saw corals in late 2014, I could only be forced away from the magnificent underwater world because my oxygen tank was running low.
