Scotland's first minister said she remained "determined" to have an independence referendum on her timescale despite Theresa May saying that "now is not the time".

"I say now is not the time", she said, arguing that all of Britain's energies should be put into the forthcoming Brexit negotiations.

The Scottish Government presented a comprehensive set of plans and suggestions at the end of past year to prevent Scotland being taken out of the single market and avoid a Tory hard Brexit.

"It goes far beyond people's choices on independence - it's when Scotland as a nation has the right to determine its own future", he said.

Speaking on Thursday, Mrs May said: Right now we should be working together, not pulling apart.

Politically, it may not be easy for Ms May to refuse another Scottish referendum for which the two Parliaments ~ in Britain and Scotland ~ will have to extend their approval.

"I think it would play disastrously [in Scotland]".

"That's my job as prime minister and so for that reason I say to the SNP: now is not the time".

Mrs May was heckled as said she was working "closely with the devolved administrations including the Scottish government and listening to their proposals".

Ms Sturgeon last night defended her plans and said Scots had a right to choose a difference path to the rest of the UK.

May's remarks came after Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's recent announcement that she will seek a second referendum by asking the Scottish Parliament to vote on the matter as early as next week.

Ruth Davidson, the Scottish Tory leader, and David Mundell, the United Kingdom government's Scottish secretary, were forced to deny that May had been persuaded to make her statement on the eve of the SNP conference to provoke its activists into taking a far more partisan stance.

On winning her seat, Winnie Ewing said: "Stop the World, Scotland wants to get on".

Ms Sturgeon wants a referendum to be held in the autumn of next year or the spring of 2019, to coincide with the expected conclusion of the UK's negotiations with the EU.

"It would be unfair to the people of Scotland that they would be being asked to make a crucial decision without the information they need to make that decision". Polling expert John Curtice told Business Insider that doing so would cause a surge in support for independence and be "politically catastrophic".

"If we were to keep to the First Minister's timetable this is exactly what would happen in Scotland too. We still hope they will step back from that vote".
