Agnew (9/2) will take charge of the first team for Sunday's clash with Man Utd, but the club are likely to appoint a new boss in the subsequent global break.

The Spaniard led Boro up to the Premier League last season, but then struggled in England's top-flight, winning only four of his 27 matches up until his departure.

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka could lose his job if his side are beaten by Manchester United on Sunday, according to the Mirror.

The former Real Madrid assistant manager took over at the Riverside in November 2013 to become Middlesbrough's first ever non-British boss.

Middlesbrough have made a decision to part company with head coach Aitor Karanka with the club in the midst of relegation dogfight.

The club met with Karanka and following discussions, Boro said it was in their "best interests" to make the change.

Their first season back in the Premier League has been a tough one and Boro find themselves second from bottom after twenty-seven games.

The 43-year-old Spaniard was appointed manager three-and-a-half years ago and thanked the Boro hierarchy for the "wonderful opportunity" they afforded him.

Middlesbrough are the lowest scorers in the Premier League this season with just 19 goals to their name. Former Leicester boss Pearson was wanted by some of the Foxes' title-winning squad to replace Claudio Ranieri after his sacking in February, but Boro could take the plunge after contacting him a year ago when Karanka's future was in serious doubt.

"This club will always hold a special place for me and I wish everyone connected with Middlesbrough the very best for the future".
