Martin leaves Cal to lead Missouri men's basketball

Spencer Simpson | 16 March, 2017, 00:24

After losing in the first round of the NIT to Cal State Bakersfield, the California Golden Bears have now lost their head coach.

Martin resigned after three seasons at Cal on Wednesday, to "pursue other opportunities", the school announced.

One of the names thrown about early for the IL coaching job will coach against the Illini in December when the two teams meet in their annual Bragging Rights game in St. Louis.

Missouri fired coach Kim Anderson after three seasons where he posted a 27-68 record, including an 8-46 mark in Southeastern Conference play. Martin coached at Missouri State from 2008-09 through the 2010-11 season.

Cal Athletics Director Mike Williams said in a statement that the school would open a nationwide search for the team's next permanent head coach. He has been rumored for many different jobs including Missouri and IL, who both fired their underperforming head coaches.

Assistant Wyking Jones will serve as Cal's interim head coach. He also proved to be a good recruiter, putting together a very strong Class of 2015, which featured five-star prospects Jaylen Brown (the No. 3 overall pick in last year's NBA Draft) and Ivan Rabb, who could be a first-round selection this year. Martin went on to play at Purdue and later had a four-year National Basketball Association career with the Atlanta Hawks.

Cal was 62-39 in Martin's three seasons. He engineered Cal to an NCAA Tournament in 2016, but made an early exit when the team was ousted by No. 12 seed Hawai'i. He will become Missouri's fifth head coach since 1999.
