So the Family Link app is installed on the parent's device, through which they create a new Google Account for their kid - they then they sign in to their kid's device using these new account credentials.

With that in mind, Google is today debuting a new app created to help give parents more control over their kids' smartphone and tablet usage, letting mums and dads remotely lock it down when it's time to do something more productive. Finally, you can remotely lock your kid's phone or tablet when it's time for bed.

Google goes on to clarify that it is ultimately the parent's job to manage what their kids view on their device.

Family Link lets you manage your child's device usage. This can be set at a certain time of day or with a switch on the parent's end of the two-app connection.

The only caveat here is that Family Link is now invite-only so you can request one here and during setup, it also asks users to pay $0.30 for the service. Making this process a breeze is Family Link's single application, downloadable straight from Google Play. It isn't clear how freely Google is giving out these invites.

Think of Family Link like parental controls plus monitoring.

While standard versions of Apple iOS and Google Android have some basic parental controls, those features have generally been an afterthought compared to the rest of the operating system and aren't as extensive as the controls offered on kids devices or Family Link. Yes, you'll have to request an invite and your kids also have to be under 13 years old. Of course there is also an "all" category as the very first tab which is what you would see first upon opening the Google app with this new UI and tapping on the search bar. The app shows a list of your kids' most-used apps, their physical location and options for managing their privileges.
