VERMILLION, S.D. -University of South Dakota's men's basketball team will take on the Iowa Hawkeyes in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) at 6 p.m. Wednesday from Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

Northern Iowa (24-8), which finished second in the Valley and lost to Drake in Sunday's conference tournament championship game, is a 10th seed as well and will play seventh seed DePaul (26-7) at 11 a.m. Friday in Starkville, Miss.

The Hawkeyes will host Missouri State in the first round on Thursday.

The South Dakota Coyotes received a #8 seed after their 22-11 record in the regular season, including a conference-leading 12-4 record in Summit league play before falling to eventual conference champion South Dakota State in the conference semi-finals.

If Iowa wins it's first NIT home game (the NIT selection show will begin at 7:30P Central time on ESPNU), they will get a home game in game two. Peter Jok leads the team in scoring with 19.8 points per game while Nicholas Baer leads the team in rebounding with 5.8 boards per game and Jordan Bohannon leads the team in assists with 4.7 assists per game this season.

Only four Big Ten teams, third-seeded Maryland, fifth-seeded Ohio State and ninth-seeded Purdue and Michigan State, were selected to the NCAA field. We'll have more on Iowa's NIT appearance and opponent later this evening. Those big wins elevated the Hawkeyes into NCAA Tournament conversations, but yet another early exit in the Big Ten Tournament (seemingly a rite of spring) cost Iowa any shot at making the Big Dance. South Dakota has been a solid team against the spread this season, but running into Iowa right now doesn't bode well for the Coyotes.

UNI has been in the tournament three times - the Panthers made back-to-back appearances in 2010 and 2011.
