But the name did not go down with the ship, and a different mini-submarine that has been dubbed "Boaty McBoatface" is now heading out on its first mission to the Antarctic. The Internet, being the Internet, responded as expected: by voting overwhelmingly to name the ship, estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, "Boaty McBoatface".

"Boaty McBoatface" is making its maiden voyage, on a research expedition to the deepest, coldest waters on earth.

More about Boaty McBoatface here.

Like many heroes, Boaty McBoatface's story was borne out of tragedy.

When scientists asked the public to name a £200million, they thought it would be a nice idea, but one comedy suggestion sent the plan way off course, and a little yellow submarine ended up with a new name. But the council opted to overrule the will of the people, and named the ship the Royal Research Ship Sir David Attenborough instead.

The first of the Boaties departs from Punta Arenas, Chile on Friday aboard the polar ship the RSS James Clark Ross. It will gather data on water flow and underwater turbulence in the Orkney Passage, a region of the Southern Ocean about 500 miles from the Antarctic Peninsula. The information will help scientists better understand how the ocean is reacting to a warming climate.

But, instead of choosing a name connected to science, the British public chose a amusing, not-so-serious one: Boaty McBoatface.

A suggested name was Boaty McBoatFace, and it quickly became the most popular choice with the name winning the vote by a huge majority.

"One of the most surprising features of the climate change that we are now experiencing is that the abyssal waters of the world ocean have been warming steadily over the last few decades". Boaty #1 will measure the ocean turbulence in this area to determine how that area has been affected by climate change.

"One of the most surprising features of the climate change that we are now experiencing is that the abyssal waters of the world ocean have been warming steadily over the last few decades", Professor Alberto Naveira Garabato wrote in the press release. "And so, at the NERC National Oceanography Centre, Autosub Long Range Boaty McBoatface was born".
