Scottish independence referendum now looking 'inevitable'

George Galloway 'The SNP will organise their own referendum if British Parliament refuses it' Our host pointed out the pitfalls of refusing Scotland a new independence referendum

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is open to holding a second independence referendum as early as 2018.

"I think [that] would be the common sense time for Scotland to have that choice, if that is the road we choose to go down", Sturgeon told the BBC's political editor, Laura Kuenssberg.

The news comes the day after Nicola Sturgeon said she could hold a vote in late 2018, once the Brexit deal for the United Kingdom had begun to emerge.

A second referendum on Scottish independence would require permission from Westminster - and such a request could prove hard. It found that 50 per cent would vote Yes and 50 per cent No, in a poll that included those who said they knew how they would vote and were either very likely or certain to vote.

Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale also criticized Sturgeon, saying the first minister's comments are creating division and that she would do better by "ruling out" another independence referendum altogether.

Sturgeon, who leads the pro-independence Scottish National Party, has complained bitterly about Britain's decision to withdraw from the European Union.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is indicating the country's likely to have another vote next year on whether it wants to stay in the UK.

Secondly, if I remember correctly, even Jesus only had a...

"We don't believe there should be a second referendum", said Greg Swift, May's spokesman.

But also, it's up to the Westminster government to permit another referendum.

But as UK Prime Minister Theresa May failed to include access to the single market in her priorities - something the SNP regards as of key interest to the country - Sturgeon said the referendum would be "all but inevitable".

The Scottish First Minister's opposition to Brexit was exacerbated following May's January announcement during which she indicated her government would not be seeking any partial European Union membership including access to the EU's common tariff-free market.

Another referendum in Scotland looks doubtful as they would have to be approved Theresa May beforehand. I suggested that Sturgeon's sense of urgency might be explained by opinion polls showing her "tanking" approval rating. "It was a fair, decisive and legal vote, both sides agreed to abide by that and we think that both sides should and that the continued discussion around a second referendum is a distraction".

Overall, Britain voted by a margin of 52 to 48 percent previous year to quit the 28-nation bloc " but voters in Scotland voted by 62 percent to 38 percent to stay in.
