The world's fattest woman at 79 stone (500kg) has lost a fifth of her body weight in three weeks after flying for life-saving stomach surgery in India.

The name of the women is Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, who previously weighed around 500 kilos, had not left her house in Egypt in over two decades until arriving for Mumbai.

Doctors expect El Aty to lose more weight before she can return home to Egypt.

She was then flown last month on a plane especially modified with safety gear, like a portable ventilator and defibrillator, to Saifee Hospital in India.

On March 7th 2017, Eman successfully underwent a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy at Saifee Hospital. The 36-year-old is now on a oral fluids and accepting them well.

'Through medicines, we have tried our best to help her lose as much weight as possible, but medicine can't help her reduce weight anymore.

"Eman has lost over 100 kilograms and has been shedding weight gradually on a daily basis with all the treatment and support", she told AFP. "She had an uneventful surgery and anesthesia course", read a hospital statement.

Ahmed, who is from Alexandria, weighed 11 pounds at birth and was diagnosed with elephantiasis, a condition which causes body parts to swell due to parasitic infection.

The bariatric surgery, which shrinks the stomach and is used as a last resort to treat people who are dangerously obese, took place Tuesday.

However, Dr Lakdawala told the BBC in December that he believed Ms Abd El Aty did not have elephantiasis but suffered from obesity-related lymphoedema which causes big swelling of the legs. "We had to remove her gallbladder as well, as she had 15 stones", he said.

There is no history of obesity in her family, inclining the doctors to suspect a genetic mutation may be responsible for the uncontrolled weight gain.

By the time she was 11, her weight had risen sharply and she suffered a stroke which left her bedridden.
