Adults Are Having Less Sex Now Than They Were Two Decades Ago

The sex rates of those people living with their love partners were the ones that decreased the most, according to the study. But even with this sharp decline, if you're in relationship you're still likely having more sex than your peers who aren't in one.

New dating platforms like Tinder and a more permissive sexual culture may be providing new opportunities for single people to have sex, the researchers write, but not enough to prevent an overall decline.

Researchers followed 159 married couples in a variety of industries (education, health care, retail, government, etc.) for two weeks, asking them to complete two short surveys each day.

Could it be that they are less happy and thus engaging less in sex, or does having less bedroom action come first and lead to less happiness?

In 2002, for example, the average adult had sex about 64 times a year. From between 1995 and 1999, people were having sex on average 62 times per year, but by 2010 this had fallen to 54 times a year.

The findings were published March 7 in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.

"Despite their reputation for hooking up, Millennials and the generation after them (known as iGen or Generation Z) are actually having sex less often than their parents and grandparents did when they were young", said Twenge.

The report, which was published Tuesday, analyzed data collected from 1989 to 2014 and found adults living in the US had sex seven to nine times fewer than what they did in the 1990s.

People in the United States are also getting married later, and therefore spending more of their twenties single, than previous generations. Simply browsing in Facebook gives some sort of pleasure not knowing that time is slowly passing by - time that can be indulged with their partners in sexual activity.

The study also found that married people's sexual activity (about 55 times in 2014) declined so much from 73 times in 1990 that it's less than for those who have never been married (59 times).

The authors revealed that those who engaged in sex in between their end of shift and when they report to work again appeared to be in their positive moods at work.

"In a previous paper, we found that the happiness of adults over age 30 declined between 2000 and 2014", she said.

Indeed, the number of 18- to 29-year-olds who are living with a partner has remained steady over the past decade, while the number of 18- to 29-year-olds who were married fell from 29 percent in 2004 to 16 percent in 2014, according to Gallup.

Is it possible to be happy when having less sex?

"We have a time when people in theory should be happy and satisfied with their lives, based on some social indicators", Twenge said. "People's minds are occupied with things other than the physical connection, and that has increased in modern life, and especially from the 80s and 90s and forward".
