However, AT&T, the second-biggest wireless carrier in the United States, did not reveal the reason behind the outage or how many customers were affected.

AT&T said at 8:15 p.m. that the issue was resolved.

"AT&T is experiencing a nationwide outage which is affecting 911 calls", authorities in Washington, D.C., said in an email alert. "The FCC will investigate the root cause of the outage and its impact". AT&T also apologized for the inconvenience that affected customers might have experienced.

The company declined to answer questions Thursday about the outage and instead issued a brief statement saying service had been restored to the affected customers.

The issue was limited to AT&T phones and not a 911 issue.

AT&T users throughout Florida may not be able to call 911. Working to resolve ASAP.

A short time later AT&T addressed the outage with a Tweet informing customers that an unspecified issue was affecting some 911 calls.

NENA said the recent outage highlights the need to transition the 911 system to 'to robust and resilient "Next Generation 9-1-1" technology'. However, Longview dispatchers say they have not experienced any reports from local citizens of problems with 911 so far.

911 handles 240 million calls a year, according to the National Emergency Number Association.

A similar problem has been reported in different parts of Texas and across the country. Service has since been restored, but given the seriousness of the situation, the FCC has opened an investigation into what went wrong.
