Startling pink 'Ghostbusters'-style water flows from faucets

Pink water Onoway apologizes for 'alarming' pink tap water

Residents of Onoway, Alberta, complained to the town office when taps began running pink water on Monday.

Potassium permanganate, also known as potassium salt, is a chemical disinfectant commonly used to remove iron and hydrogen sulphide from well water and waste water.

A stuck valve that allowed an excess amount of potassium permanganate into the town's water distribution centre may have been to blame, according to a statement from Mayor Dale Krasnow.

The town's mayor, Dale Krasnow, released a statement Tuesday saying no one was put at risk by the freakish incident.

Bright pink water has flushed out of a Canadian town's water system.

Mr Krasnow said the town was flushing its water distribution system and encouraged residents to run their taps until the water was clear.

On the medicinal front, potassium permanganate can be used as an antiseptic and fungicide.

Her daughter called her from the bathroom to let her know that their water had turned pink, too, The Huffington Post reported. Absolutely, without a doubt.

"Individuals with sensitive skin may wish to use an alternate source of water for bathing, at this time, due to small but potential risk for temporary skin irritation", AHS spokeswoman Shannon Evans said in an email.

"It started out with my neighbour asking me if I had pink water, and I'm like "I don't think so", Vicki Van Zanten Heale said.

Though he emphasised there was no cause for alarm, Mayor Krasnow apologised for the way the situation was handled.

Over the day, the colour of the water coming out of her taps improved - but Wilkinson and a number of other residents said there should have been better communication with residents from town officials. "Her reason? "[The water] was very, very pink".
