Toronto's mumps outbreak continues to spread; three new cases were confirmed Wednesday, bringing the total to 31 this year.

On Tuesday, they identified a probable mumps case in the Village of Lake Zurich and one suspected case at Libertyville High School in Libertyville.

On the heels of a mumps outbreak at Barrington High School, officials at the Chicago Public Schools were monitoring a possible case of the highly infectious virus at an Andersonville elementary school.

"However, if there are multiple cases in a school...we actually have the ability to exclude students who are not up-to-date with their immunizations from school", Dubey said. The mumps diagnosis by the city's Department of Public Health is only preliminary, and CPS says it will work with the department to take whatever precautionary measures it needs to, the report added.

"I'm concerned-it's frustrating that some kids are vaccinated and some aren't", said parent Diane Snyder. There is also one probable case of the mumps at a school in Arlington Heights in Cook County.

Later this week, Barrington High School will offer a free vaccination clinic, aimed at halting the spread of the virus.

In severe cases, mumps can cause infection in the brain, painful swelling of the testicles or ovaries, pancreatitis and hearing loss.

Shari says officials will address the media about the cases once parents at each respective school have been notified.

Mumps is passed through saliva and mucus, especially by sharing cups or other items, officials said.
