After Avelica-Gonzalez dropped off his 12-year-old daughter, he was in the process of leaving to take the 13-year-old girl to school and was stopped by ICE agents. A palm-frond cross rested on the dashboard.

In the video, his daughter, Fatima Avelica, is sobbing as her father is put in a law enforcement vehicle in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

According to Kice, Avelica-Gonzalez remains in ICE custody at this time.

ICE agents arrested a father after he dropped off one of his children at school.

"It's really hard what we're going through", Avelica-Gonzalez's daughter Brenda told KABC.

Avelica-Gonzalez was targeted for arrest, ICE officials said in a statement, because he has several prior criminal convictions, including a DUI conviction from 2009 and an outstanding order of removal dating back to 2014. The next, she watched US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents escort him into a black vehicle and take him away (video below). His 13-year-old daughter and wife were in the auto, and his daughter began to tape the incident.

Ricardo Mireles, the executive director of the Highland Park charter school Academia Avance, told press that Avelica's DUI conviction occurred almost 10 years ago.

"The irony is that the eighth graders went to the Museum of Tolerance today", said Ricardo Mireles.

Mireles told KABC, "I think the impacts are going to come in terms of, 'Hey, how do we pay rent?"

Is the solution for illegal immigration to tear apart functioning family units in the interest of winning political points?

"No one else was detained during the vehicle stop", ICE officials said.

"It is legal for ICE authorities to dress in police uniform, but may lead to constitutional violations when it comes to evidence gathered", Robinson added.

Emi MacLean, staff attorney for the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, told the New York Daily News the family had a "small victory" when Avelica-Gonzalez was granted a temporary stay, which means he would not be immediately deported.

U-visas were created to help victims of crime, those who have suffered mental or physical abuse or those who have helpful law enforcement and it is not known why Mr Avelica-Gonzalez would be eligible for one.
