France election: Fillon loses support of allied party in fresh blow

Fillon says not to quit French presidential race despite probe Fillon vows to stay in French race amid defections

Pressure ratcheted up on Fillon after the former premier revealed on Wednesday that he would be charged over allegations that he paid his wife Penelope and children almost 900,000 euros (S$1.34 million) for alleged bogus parliamentary jobs, over a period spanning more than a decade.

Questions have been raised over Mr Fillon's integrity after he ran his campaign on the basis he was an "irreproachable" Presidential candidate.

March 4: French far-right leader and a prospective presidential candidate, Marine Le Pen, has been summoned by judges over allegations of misusing European Union funds.

UDI leader Jean-Christophe Lagarde said Mr Fillon had become a liability, and that as long as he was a candidate, the centre-right was heading for certain failure.

Macron, meanwhile, promised a "strategy to make public life more ethical" as he unveiled his full programme for the first time.

She has already seen her earnings as member of the European Parliament cut in connection with the case.

Polls suggest, however, that she would lose in the second round to centrist Emmanuel Macron.

Sources in the Fillon camp have said there was a strong push by some in the party on Wednesday to have former prime minister Alain Juppe stand in Fillon's place, but that the plan was vetoed by Nicolas Sarkozy, the former president. "The base is holding on".

The home of Fillon, a former prime minister, was searched Thursday by police in an investigation over whether he used public money to pay his wife and children for phony jobs.

And so he knows, when he unexpectedly cancels an appearance at one of the calendar's most important electoral events and calls a last-minute press conference, it will grab attention: he knows it's the knife that France is watching.

Mixing traditionally rightwing measures such as easing strict labour controls and cutting taxes, he also stressed the need for new investment in public schools and measures to help deprived, high-immigrant areas.

"If we're for zero tolerance, it must be for everyone", Macron told the daily.

Le Pen refused to attend a summons for questioning by police last month over allegations that she made illegal European Union payments to her staff and her lawyer said on Friday she had also refused to attend a summons by judges over the allegations.

Macron believes France is too small to compete on its own in a globalised world and wants deeper integration between countries that use the euro, which would include the creation of a eurozone budget.

"I submit myself before the French people, because only the ballot box, and not an investigation directed against me, can decide who will be the next president of the republic", he said on Wednesday.

Bruno Jeanbart from the OpinionWay polling group told AFP that either Macron or Le Pen were best placed to benefit from Fillon's difficulties, but added: "One can imagine that it would more likely be Macron".

A key ally Bruno Le Maire resigned as his adviser on worldwide affairs right after the statement, saying the candidate had gone back on his word to withdraw from the election if he was placed under formal investigation.

Officials are also investigating Le Pen's bodyguard, Thierry Legier, in this matter.

Under French law, publishing violent images can carry a penalty of three years in jail and a fine of 75,000 Euros.
