At least five people were confirmed injured when a section of the roof at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, in Parktown, Johannesburg, collapsed on Thursday afternoon while construction work to fix leaks was ongoing.

"It is suspected that some contractors and three patients are now trapped under the rubble, and no one has been found yet". "Rescue workers are busy on the scene at the moment trying to ascertain the safety", ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the collapse at the entrance of the academic hospital near the maternity ward.

Footage on social media showed rescue workers digging at the rubble with their bare hands.

Cleaners at the hospital also said that they were not surprised as it "leaks every day".

"All I saw was the roof collapse, and then there was a lot of dust".

Head of Gauteng emergency medical services Arnold Malotana confirmed that around 12 people were working in the area when the structure crumbled. The eNCA television channel said four people had been injured.

Motsoaledi says the contractor who was hired for maintenance will be held accountable for the collapse.

Reports that the hospital had structural problems reportedly surfaced earlier a year ago, when the DA's Jack Bloom noted broken ceiling panels, amongst other problems, during an inspection.

Gauteng Health Department spokesperson, Steve Mabona, is on record as saying that "very minimal disruptions" would be caused during the fix project.

More emergency services are still arriving.
