The company is announcing the next slate of updates meant to make users feel better about using the service to converse with one another. Chief among them is the option to mute tweets from "egg" accounts that don't have profile photos.

The post is the latest in a series of safety updates made by Twitter in the past several months, with the company looking to curb a proliferation of issues related to harassment and abuse. They received a message saying their account would be restricted for up to 12 hours, and that it would then return to normal. As the company's user and revenue growth stagnated and public backlash increased, Twitter began to address complaints, rolling out more updates in the past few months than it has in the past few years. It is relatively easy to build connections and if its really that important to you, you can probably get a respectable following in a couple of weeks. And that takes away a lot of value from banning their accounts in the first place, since they are going to pop back up with a new one. Towards that, the company will now be keeping a watchful eye upon the fields you fill in while registering.

Twitter trolls be warned: Mute is coming for you.

People don't have to use their real names on Twitter.

These functionalities just launched so usage is now an unknown but simplicity tends to do well on Twitter. "This will throttle abusers even before someone will even recognize they are being abused". While the new algorithm will make Twitter more hands-on, it also could incorrectly identify an account as abusive. Expanding on the mute feature implemented last November, users will be able to more easily gain access to mute words or entire conversations right from the Twitter timeline. Twitter, which already uses technology to try and limit some communications, will still review user reports on potential abuse.

The company confirmed that it's taking punitive actions against harassers, which were spotted in the wild earlier in February.

"There's still a risk of false positives, and Twitter definitely needs mechanisms for appeal and reinstatement where those occur, but it does finally feel like Twitter is making meaningful progress here", Dawson said. Muting will be more powerful as well with the ability to block Tweets that include certain words or phrases for as long as you want.
