The Internet blew a tire today as Amazon's AWS cloud service experienced problems - specifically S3 in US-EAST-1.

Amazon Web Services, which helps companies run their websites and apps, is working to address a storage issue that caused some Internet services to falter Tuesday.

Amazon Web Services' S3 data-storage system is now experiencing outages and it's causing huge problems for a large number of websites and apps.

As of 3:55 E.T., the service is still experiencing problems, but Amazon Web Services says it is working on it. Furthermore, connected lightbulbs, thermostats and other IoT gadgets relying on Amazon's services are also impacted. We continue to work on recovery for adding new objects to S3 and expect to start seeing improved error rates within the hour.

A large number of web based services and applications were affected and appeared to be working slower than usual.

Amazon Web Services went down today and people are freaking out.

Notably, Netflix's streaming service remained available, despite the fact that Netflix is making heavy use of Amazon's cloud infrastructure.

Canvas announced that it was experiencing an outage that they determined was caused by AWS at 12:50 p.m. on Tuesday - many users have not been able to access the site.

AWS is a data storage platform that many websites and internet service use to host their content.

A spokesman for Amazon did not immediately return a request for more information.

The Associated Press' own photos, webfeeds and other online services were also affected. If you received one of our newsletters and some of the spots and links are broken, this is most certainly a direct effect of the current AWS outage.
