With free agency coming up and teams now being allowed to use the franchise tag, the Dolphins decided they needed money more than an aging vet.

Earl Mitchell started 24 games at defensive tackle for Miami's disappointing defensive line, which was a major factor in Miami's opponents averaging 140 rushing yards per game against the Dolphins (ranked 30th). Brought in as a pass rusher, the former No. 1 overall pick collected just 1 1/2 sacks last season and was set to cost the Dolphins $10.5 million against the cap in 2017.

The Dolphins drafted Laremy Tunsil in the first round of the 2016 draft. Albert has struggled to stay healthy in recent seasons and, as The MMQB's Albert Breer pointed out on Twitter, he may not be "equipped" to play tackle anymore.

Now, if (when) the Dolphins cut him, he'll be a free agent again.

When looking at the draft Miami is best suited to wait until the second round to get a quality guard.

Albert, 32, had a respectable season helping Miami rush for 1,824 yards.

Albert, 32, is a two-time Pro Bowl selection, including in 2015 with the Dolphins.

Though the 2017 free agent class wasn't too intriguing a few weeks ago, the release of players like Albert, Victor Cruz, and now according to reports Tony Romo has the league in a frenzy for new talent. The Dolphins carried him on injured reserve all season, but the team has four proven starters - Byron Maxwell, Xavien Howard, Tony Lippett and Bobby McCain - presently on the roster. He has never played a full season during his three years in Miami, starting 35 of a possible 48 games.
