'Excited' Root looks forward to lead England his own way

"I couldn't be more pleased for him" Stokes said of Root

Joe Root has promised that he will use the England captaincy to spur him on to greater achievements with the bat.

"When we bat together, we generally complement each other pretty well in the way we go about things, and I think that will be very similar in the way we lead this team".

Such presentations usually take place at the home of cricket, Lord's, but Root's appearance on Yorkshire territory could be part of a bid to reconnect with the game outside of its southern strongholds.

"Just as when Joe was made vice-captain, that doesn't necessarily mean Ben is going to be a shoo-in to be England captain at some stage in the future", he said.

"We need people to fall in love with it again", he told Sky Sports. I hope to make the people watching want to come to the matches more and make it an entertaining spectacle.

"I think I will go about things my own way and see where it takes us", Root said, facing the media for the first time as captain at Headingley.

"I've got a lot of experience now with 50-odd games under my belt and I'd like to think for the past few years I have started to think as a captain in my own mind, so if Cooky ever needed help or advice or the bowlers came up to me and asked what I thought then I was switched on enough to think "this is what I'd do".

"We've got a team with a great blend of experience and raw talent coming into the squad and there's a core group of players that have played 20-30 games".

During Cook's tenure and the time that his predecessor Andrew Strauss was in charge, people criticised England for not being bold and daring, but Stokes insisted that this is the type of attitude he and Root will look to instill in the Test side.

"I've always believed that Rooty was going to be captain", said Stokes. It actually excites me that it's not the end for him. He has that and respect goes a long way. "I think of course there will be times when I need a bit of help but I am really excited to get hold of the role and try and make it mine". It is England vice-captain, it is supporting Rooty, but it is also the recognition from him and the people at the top of the European Central Bank.

"Over the last couple of years I've had the added responsibility of the vice-captaincy".

"I'd like to think I'd be quite instinctive".

"Me and Ben have known each other for probably 11, 12 years now", Root said. "I think it would be silly not to take any advice from him [Cook] and I am sure there will be a number of players I'll call upon on to help me on occasions within the dressing room but I will want to do things my way as well".
