Laurie went down the comedic route, first saying "this is obviously a bad mix-up", before accepting his award "on behalf of psychopathic billionaires everywhere".

"I won at the last ever Golden Globes", Laurie told the audience at The Beverly Hilton hotel as he collected his trophy. It's just that it has the words "Hollywood, ' "foreign, ' and 'press" in the title".

Laurie added drily: "I think to some Republicans even the word Association is slightly sketchy".

Claire Foy, who plays the Queen in Netflix's royal epic The Crown, was named best TV drama actress and the show won best TV drama.

"Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for this incredible honor", he said.

This marks the actor's seventh Golden Globe nomination and third win, previously taking back-to-back honors in 2006 and '07 for his performance as Dr. Gregory House on Fox's House.

Laurie portrayed notorious arms dealer and global threat Richard Onslow Roper on the AMC limited series.

Meryl Streep might have called out Donald Trump in her impassioned Golden Globes acceptance speech - but she wasn't the only one doing so on the night.

Vince Vaughn, Christian Slater and Naomie Harris looked perplexed as Hiddleston recalled how he'd bumped into a group of doctors on a recent trip to Sudan who had "binge-watched" The Night Manager.

The Night Manager lost out on the award for best mini-series or motion picture made for television - that went to The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.
