BMW Might Build a Sportier i3

BMW's first all-electric car i3 is unveiled at a ceremony in Beijing New version of electric car from BMW

The British auto site says BMW will launch the i3S late next year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and that the new vehicle will crank up the horsepower from the current i3's 170, ultimately becoming "the market's first proper electric hot hatch". Additionally, new battery technology will give the vehicle increased range as well, which BMW says is now 114 miles on full charge. Thanks to the new battery pack, the next i3 is expected to incorporate a 50 per cent increase in range. Since the initial delivery of Tesla model is expected in mid of 2017, the new version would help BMW i3 to be equally competent by then.

In June, the Los Angeles Police Department ordered 100 BMW i3s to join 68 other electric vehicles in the LA fleet, making it the largest municipal squadron of EVs in the country.

While BMW started off in 2013 with the all-electric i3, the vehicle has failed to see competent demand. The update increase battery capacity from 22kWh to 33kWh, boosting range from 80 miles to around 114 miles.

The German newspaper spoke with BMW's development division rep Klaus Fröhlich about the company's plans regarding its autonomous driving vehicles, including the BMW i3. In other words, it's likely enough to cover an extra commute, or to get you to a town that's just out of reach today, Engadget said. Tesla model found to be superior to BMW by both market analysts and customers alike.

The refresh also promises a new aesthetic for "front and rear". The company was able to sell only 25,000 units of its earlier model, now with the latest advancements, the new BMW i3 might just give the company the sales records they were hoping for.

The i3 range as a whole will get minor styling tweaks, but aside from adjustments to the car's bumpers and possible changes to the headlights, the car's overall look will remain largely unchanged. Stay tuned to SWR for more updates and news on the redesigned 2017 BMW i3 (94 Ah).
