Facebook followed with an announcement that fake news sites are also banned from using its ads.

BuzzFeed identified over 100 sites based in Macedonia that were publishing false pro-Trump articles on the Facebook Audience Network, apparently motivated more by money than political loyalty.

"We have updated the [Audience Network Policy] to explicitly clarify that this applies to fake news", a company spokesperson said.

The electoral victory of Donald Trump has sparked heightened scrutiny of online and social media, especially the role of bogus news that appeared to help rally Trump supporters.

Facebook has announced a crackdown on the spread of "fake news" by trying to limit the amount of phony sites can make advertise.

"We do not integrate or display ads in apps or sites containing content that is illegal, misleading or deceptive, which includes fake news."

"Moving forward, we will restrict ad serving on pages that misrepresent, misstate, or hide information about the publisher, the publisher's content, or the primary goal of the web property", the company said in a statement.

Firstly Google said they are developing a policy change to stop websites that spread fake content from using AdSense advertising network.

In a way, the unofficial team has disapproved of the statement made by CEO Mark Zuckerberg at a conference last week when he said that it was "a pretty insane idea" that Facebook affected the election, according to BuzzFeed.

Facebook, too, tweaked its policies for its Facebook Audience Network, although the company insisted the change was just a clarification.

That sharing in turn led people to click on links that brought them to the Macedonian websites, which could then make money on the traffic via Google's AdSense.

To that point, a Gizmodo report alleges that Facebook has already developed tools to prevent fake news from appearing in feeds, but chose not to implement them. Facebook, Google and Twitter have to face many angry voters and citizen because the social media networks and Google allowed the spread of untrue informations.

Amid a post-election backlash brought on by either company's inability to stop the spread of bogus news article in the run up to November 8, the two tech titans separately unveiled plans aimed at reducing the reach of certain websites.

That was no doubt spurred by the fact that it, too, came under criticism for including fake election news in its search results. Without revenues in building and operating fake news websites, there would be no reason to waste time on promoting misinformation.
