UKIP MEP Roger Helmer has questioned whether Mr Woolfe would be fit to serve as leader if the party's inquiry backs Mr Hookem's version of events.

Woolfe's team released a statement Saturday indicating that an independent medical team found the bruising on his face to have been caused by something more than a fall or seizure.

Earlier, European Parliament member Nathan Gill, who visited Woolfe in hospital, said Woolfe had "reached out the hand of friendship to Mr. Hookem" and did not want to get police involved in the incident.

Mr Hookem "absolutely" denies being responsible for Mr Woolfe's injuries and claims he acted in self-defence during a "scuffle".

"I think as a conclusion of that investigation the party will consider whether disciplinary measures are appropriate and that might have implications for Steven Woolfe's candidacy".

The statement said: "Hookem stands by the statements that he made in various media interviews yesterday regarding Steve Woolfe".

Woolfe - the front-runner to be the next leader of the right-wing euroskeptic party - suffered seizures and lost consciousness after the clash during a party meeting. I never threw a punch.

Mr Woolfe has not spoken in public about the episode, but the Daily Mail quoted him as saying Mr Hookem "came at me and landed a blow" after they left the meeting room.

Mr Woolfe objected to remarks which he made, he said.

"So I went out of the room into this small anteroom where he came at me".

He singled out the party's only MP Douglas Carswell and the leader in the Welsh Assembly Neil Hamilton - both ex-Conservative MPs. I never hit him, I never slapped him, I never pushed him.

Lisa Duffy, who was runner-up in last month's leadership election, said party members were "embarrassed" by what had taken place.

Ms Evans has been touted as a possible leadership contender following the shock resignation of Diane James, but she refused to say if she had chose to run.

"If it's concluded that he started, he intentionally started, a fight - if, I stress, if - then that would be a black mark against his ability to stand", said Mr Helmer.

But Hookem told the BBC there were "no punches thrown whatsoever".

"Now, I don't see that I can support Steven and yes, I will be standing".

Ukip MEP Jonathan Arnott added it was "obvious to anybody" that Mr Woolfe could no longer be a candidate.
