Alec Baldwin's very big deal: playing Donald Trump on 'SNL'

Mr. Baldwin will fulfill the role, previously held by Darrell Hammond and Taran Killam, for the entire season, sources told The Hollywood Reporter.

It's the showdown of the century, black versus blue, day versus night, Donald Trump versus Hillary Clinton - and it's all by way of Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon.

Mr. Baldwin, a close friend of Mr. Lorne, has guest-hosted "SNL" a record 16 times since his first appearance in 1990. Then in June, Baldwin said to The Telegraph of Trump, "Now we have Trump, who's built from the DNA of intolerance and suspicion and all the other bad things that have been brewing in this country for the last 25 years".

SNL has been knocking it out of the park with actors performing cameo political impersonations.

Hopefully, this booking will lead to Baldwin also getting a full episode this season, given his status as an "SNL" staple.

During the 2008 election, former cast member Tina Fey returned to the show to play vice president candidate Sarah Palin. It's similar in a way to when they brought in Larry David to be Bernie Sanders, likely presuming that he was not going to end up being the Democratic nominee. He doesn't appear to have performed as Trump publicly before, although he does have a knack for impersonations.

Last year, as Baldwin spoke about the need for campaign finance reform on Howard Stern's show, he said, "If Trump was the GOP nominee, it's exactly what we deserve right now with the system we have".

Trump himself guest-hosted the show in 2015.

Airing on Saturday, October 1st, the season premiere will be hosted by Margot Robbie with musical guest The Weeknd.
