But shortly after the awful news tumbled out Sunday morning, and the confirmation that, yes, the Marlins' inspiring ace had perished in that boat with the cratered hull, flipped on those Miami Beach rocks, the tears came next.

"When the first pitch left his hand, the first thought is, 'Oh, wow, this is something special, '" said Mets manager Terry Collins, who picked Fernandez for this year's All-Star Game.

One of the game's brightest stars was extinguished when Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez was killed along with two others in an early morning boating accident off of Miami beach.

"On behalf of the Kansas City Royals, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the Miami Marlins' family on the tragic passing of Jose Fernande". No one was wearing life vests. The identities of the two other crash victims were not released. The death of Fernandez leaves gaps in a lot of hearts today.

Major league players took to Twitter to express their condolences for Fernandez and his family.

During his interview on MLB Network's Intentional Talk, Fernandez outlined his affection for his teammates and all-things-family.

Fernandez was a passenger on the boat.

With the death of José Fernández, the world lost more than just a great baseball player.

"There was just joy with him when he played", Mattingly said.

Fernandez posted a photo of his pregnant girlfriend last week on Instagram, announcing the couple's first child. When I was there, every time he took the mound it was like we were going to win.

Chickillo, a linebacker with the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers, was in Philadelphia preparing for Sunday afternoon's game against the Eagles.

Al Leiter: "Words can not describe how sad and very bad I felt when I heard about Jose Fernandez this morning".

The debate after the game that evening was whether it would be the final start of his season, but Fernandez, in his typical style, smiled, and said that he simply would let the Marlins decide. He was unique. What happened through his life, to try to come to the US and follow his dream and save his mom, he's one of the great people in life. He gets it. He's great for the game because he plays with so much emotion.

Fernandez posted a career record of 38-17, a 2.58 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP in 471 1/3 innings (76 starts).

"Baseball's one of those games it's unforgiving because it keeps moving and it keeps going", Shapiro said.

Adding to the absence of the pitcher, video boards at an empty Marlins Park broadcast a large 16 - Fernandez's jersey number - along with his name.
