Clinton, Trump to meet separately with Israel PM Netanyahu

Juana Turner | 26 September, 2016, 00:56

Netanyahu has been in NY for the United Nations General Assembly meeting.

An Israeli official has confirmed that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump on Sunday.

Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and a close adviser to his presidential campaign, and Ron Dermer, Israel's ambassador to the United States, were also on hand for the meeting, which comes the day before the first presidential debate, according to Israeli news outlet Haaretz.

Trump met Sunday with Netanyahu for over an hour at his residence in Trump Tower in Manhattan, according to Israeli and campaign officials.

The Trump campaign did not say whether the two discussed a ban on Muslim immigration that Trump has proposed and which Netanyahu has criticized, or the issue of profiling as a way to counter terrorism.

The diplomat added that the two-state solution goes along with the vision of the Palestinian leadership, and that Israel is demolishing it, ignoring worldwide efforts to revive it.

Trump seemed to reject the idea of a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians, which has always been the USA position when it comes to brokering peace in the region.

He and Netanyahu also discussed USA military assistance to Israel, regional stability, and the country's technology sector, as well as the Iran nuclear deal, which both oppose.

In response to a bombing in NY on September 17 that injured at least 29 people, Trump cited the example of Israel. Clinton also was expected to meet with the prime minister in NY on the eve of the first debate between the candidates.

"The campaign said they also discussed Israel's experience with the security fence" used to wall off Israel from the West Bank.

Before it's here, it's on the Bloomberg Terminal.
