Watch it, cowboy: Japan's 9 safety tips for 'Pokemon Go'

Garry Little | 24 July, 2016, 14:48

He said that there was no doubt whatsoever that the game would be popular in the country.

Pokémon GO has finally made it around to the birthplace of the franchise: Japan. "Guess they deleted or hid all the spawns/and data for countries yet to have a release", posted Redditor likemsan, followed by over a hundred comments, majority talking about a similar situation.

The augmented reality game uses smartphone cameras to superimpose the cute, digital creatures on real world settings.

After experiencing server issues during its first weekend on sale in the United Kingdom, the game is once again failing to connect for many players.

"Pokemon Go" has continued to make headlines over the past two weeks not only for its commercial success, but also for the numerous global incidents of trespassing, injuries and even deaths experienced by its players.

The major cities where users are reporting about the game not working include Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, and some users in Mumbai as well, though there are users from the same city claiming to still be able to catch Pokemon and train at gyms. The availability of the game for Android and iOS will be for the time being in spite of the fact the both Microsoft and its users are calling for Niantic to release the game on Windows Phone. Niantic CEO John Hanke asked users to play with care.

The current "Pokemon Go" craze is a good example of content that originated in Japan being loved overseas.

The Nintendo share price has soared since the release of the game, and McDonald's must be hoping it can benefit in the same way.

Alarmed by reports of obsessed players being injured in the USA and elsewhere as they focused on their mobile screens instead of the real world, Japan's government this week warned players not to enter unsafe places, wander into obstacles or ride bicycles while playing Pokemon Go.

"Well I suppose using the smartphone while walking is unsafe, and small kids could be taken away by suspicious people, but I think it's alright as long as each individual stays careful", said Mori, a Pokemon fan since he was 6-years old.

The videogame giant's stock at one stage had more than doubled from its July 5 close, sending its market value soaring as investors saw the app's popularity as positive for the company's mobile gaming strategy.

Pokemon GO has caused all sorts of controversy, from the odd instance of trespassing all the way to player loss of life.
