Hillary Clinton picks Senator Tim Kaine for running mate

Garry Little | 23 July, 2016, 08:56

The person did not say who Clinton will add to the Democratic ticket, but added that the presumptive nominee and her new running mate will make their first joint appearance on Saturday in Florida.

"Well I think this is fantastic for Virginia, of course fantastic for Tim Kaine", he said. "I want someone who will be able to give me their best advice, look me in the eye, and tell me they disagree with me when they do", Clinton said.

In the final deliberations, Clinton was said to be weighing Kaine, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and New Jersey Sen.

Kaine has never lost an election, according to Clinton.

No matter, perhaps, as that time will belong to Clinton and the Democrats, whose own convention begins Monday in Philadelphia. The announcement ends months of speculation about who Clinton would pick to round out her ticket.

Though King issued only a brief statement praising Hillary Clinton's choice of Kaine as her running mate - "He's a great choice", King said through a spokesman Friday night - the ME independent made clear in an article that ran Wednesday on The Daily Beast that he's a big Kaine fan. He learned Spanish during a mission trip to Honduras while in law school, an experience he still references on the campaign trail.

Choosing Kaine also avoids a negative side-effect that picking Booker would have produced if Clinton won.

Hillary Clinton is preparing to announce her vice presidential pick as early as Friday.

But Trump said he settled on Pence - over two finalists with whom he had closer relationships, Chris Christie and Newt Gingrich - because he would help unite his divided party.

Critics of the free-trade deal, including Trump and Clinton's Democratic primary rival Bernie Sanders, say it would be unfair to USA workers and kill jobs. Picking him reflects Clinton's confidence that she already has the help she needs to unite her party: Trump.

After losing out to Joe Biden as President Barack Obama's VP pick in 2008, the president invited Kaine to serve as a chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

In the Senate, Kaine serves on the Armed Services, Budget, Foreign Relations and Aging Committees.

He spoke there of his Irish roots and his visit to Ireland in 2006, his first year as governor of Virginia, with his wife Anne and three children. Police in the German city warned people to stay indoors and avoid public places Friday as they hunted for the shooter or shooters who opened fire at a shopping mall, killing six people and wounding others.

In his nomination acceptance speech, Trump blasted Clinton's foreign policy record as secretary of state - citing the bloody tumult in Iraq, Syria, Egypt and Libya - saying her legacy is "death, destruction, terrorism and weakness" and a "change in leadership" is needed.

"Both fought for middle class & will do so in the White House", Villaraigosa wrote, along with the hashtag #StrongerTogether, one of Clinton's campaign slogans.
