Flash of light, loud boom over Phoenix skies likely a meteor

Watch- Bright fireball lights up pre-dawn sky over Arizona Flash of light, loud boom over Phoenix skies likely a meteor

It may be a while before scientists are able to figure out exactly what caused the loud boom, bright flash, and lingering debris trail in the Arizona skies early Thursday morning.

A meteor is the suspected source.

A viewer took this shot of the early morning sky.

The first videos and photos of the meteor streak show a dramatic bright flare as the space rock fizzles overhead. As part of this effort, it operates a network of meteor cameras within the US that are capable of detecting meteors brighter than the planet Jupiter.

"If there was anything there would be just very, very small specs of what's left".

Eyewitness reports placed the object at an altitude of 57 miles above the Tonto National Forest east of the town of Payson, moving nearly due south. It was last seen at an altitude of 22 miles above that same forest.

NASA believes the fireball, which lit the pre-dawn sky over Phoenix, was a small asteroid burning up in Earth's atmosphere.

Witnesses report a loud boom and the night sky lighting up at 3:48 a.m. Surveillance video shows area residences lit up like daylight for a second as the event passed.

Phoenix resident John Burgmeier said he heard multiple booms as the fireball came out of the northeast.

Arizona, famously, is already home to a massive meteor crater.
